First Ridge Vermentino Frizzante
-
Vermentino is regarded by many as Australia’s great white hope. The argument is compelling given its temperate Mediterranean homeland of Sardinia. Australia has many similarly temperate winegrowing sites with Mudgee right in the zone.
Vermentino has flavours of fresh pear and honeydew melon with a slinky lemon pith mouthfeel and a fresh, bright acidity.
These flavours lend themselves to this unique sparkling style with the burst of bubbles magnifying the vermentino’s inherent generosity.
Very pale white gold in colour with subtle aromas of white nectarine, grapefruit and dragon fruit lifted by the buoyant bubbles.
Discrete flavours that echo the nose – pineapple, grapefruit and white stonefruit with hints of ripe custard apple. The texture is subtle yet carries vermentino’s hallmark lemon pith character. An energetic acidity adds vibrancy to the finish.

2024 Australian Alternative Varieties Wine Show

“Cut green apple, nashi pear and lilly pilly fruit. Star jasmine and fresh linen. Full of those aromas as you walk by a fresh juice stall. Wonderfully ripe with grapefruit pith, stony blue rock and oyster brine salinity. The palate is full of marine shells and ocean spray. This transcribes Mudgee’s abundant sunshine and captures the coastal minerals of the Mediterranean Sea – vermentino's home turf.”

Ultra pale lemon and lime tints. Lemon curd and jasmine on the nose. Tight and narrow on the palate entry, lemon and cracked quartz notes show at the core then it fills and builds weight towards the long finish. A lovely saline deliciousness to its finish that demands repeat visits.

First Ridge ‘Alira’ Prosecco
-
Light yellow colour; simple dried-herb and slightly peppery aroma, palate light and crisp, dry and appetising. A simple and refreshing glass of fizz.
First Ridge Fiano
-
93 Points - “Such an aromatic and attractive wine, its beauty explodes from the glass. Fresh with some textural interest - go here.
“A step up from the 2022 release, there is a lot more going on here. White fleshed stonefruit, canned pear juice, cut melon and a lemony drive lead the way. White pepper and cinnamon like spices frame the edges and a soft veil of creaminess with a gravitating textural drive add detail. A lemony tang and fine spices cling to a elongated finish. An absolutely beautiful drink, Cacio e Pepe or fresh Moreton Bay bugs will do the trick just fine.”
-
92 Points - “Fiano continues to make an impression – a good one – seemingly wherever it is grown in this country. An Italian variety originally from Campania and Sicily, it just loves our climate. This example sees a little barrel fermentation included, 30%, by way of wild yeasts. Deep straw, this is delightfully aromatic with stone fruits, figs, along with a hint of the tropicals, all on show. There is even a slight touch of a pleasing nuttiness. A minerally backing with good concentration throughout and decent length which persists well. The wine has focus and will provide pleasure for the next half dozen years. A very fine local Fiano.
“Gentle yet persistent flavours on the palette that reflect the nose with overtones of almond skin and Josephine pear. A fine line of citrus-etched acidity drives the finish to long and satisfying conclusion.”
-
90 Points - "Fragrant frangipane, almond blossom, buttery pastry, sourdough, lemon curd, brine, green melon and stone fruit. Rich and spiced with plenty of fleshy stone fruit support. Sharp acid cuts through a slippery mid palate. Pleasant and floral and ready for summer."
First Ridge Pinot Grigio
-
Light straw yellow colour. Green papaya and snow pea shoots on the nose. Palate is taut with green apple fruit and a zing of acidity. It hasn’t melded together so there’s a clash of sweet and sour at the finish.
First Ridge Sangiovese Rosé
-
Sangiovese is the backbone variety of Tuscany where it dates back to Etruscan times – its name a corruption of ‘blood of Jove’. Best known under the guise of Chianti, Australia’s first sangiovese vines were planted in Mudgee in the mid 1980’s.
Sangiovese is mid-weight with savoury flavours of sour cherry, fresh tobacco and dusky spices. These flavours echo clearly in this sophisticated rosé.
Pale candy pink in colour with brisk aromas of fresh strawberries, guava and Turkish nougat on the nose.
Strawberries and cream is the first (delicious) impression on the palette but there’s much more depth and character here. The savoury flavours of sangiovese are underpinned by the trace of skin tannin. A vibrant acidity enlivens the finish. -
Medium-full salmon-pink with a trace of development; the aroma is at an in-between stage, not fresh and primary but not yet showing secondary complexity, but shy, plain and slightly leafy/savoury. The palate is light and crisp with a little herbal greenness in the middle and a clean, dry, balanced finish that is quite refreshing. Modest length and a clean cut-off.
First Ridge ‘Christina’ Sangiovese
-
Bright crimson in colour and a savoury mix of currant, herb, tomato leaf and cola.
Structural and bright with good depth of fruit and intense chalky tannins making for an excellent food wine.
Lovely now, but will also soften over the next couple of years. A very good wine from this Mudgee winery, which specialises in in premium Italian-style expressions. -
Lovely colour, bright and vibrant. Lifted aromas of cherry, violets, cedar, bramble and spice. Firm, bright and red fruit driven. Cherry, raspberry, spice, anise and firm tannins are all doing their thing. Savoury, textured and long.
First Ridge ‘Marco’
-
“Black cherry skin, asphalt and charred rubber. Slivers of red raspberry compote and paprika spice. A wealth of elevated acidity and grainy tannins with some sightings of fleshy barbera throughout. This speaks of the sangiovese frame and stature more than it does of barbera's gently rolling curves. A wine that would stand up well for tomato-based slow cooked meats.” Wine Companion
-
Dark and a youthful red in appearance. Aromas of blackberry, cherry, bramble, spice, earth and dried herbs. Fleshy and dark fruit driven in flavour. There's plenty of flesh and juiciness along with shapely, firm tannins and crunchy acidity.
First Ridge Montepulciano
-
Inky, dark and opaque in appearance. Brooding, dark aromas of mulberry, plum conserve, anise, dried herbs and spice. Full-flavoured, fleshy and crunchy on the palate. Chock full of blackberry and blueberry flavours, along with anise, coffee and cola. The tannins are firm and serious and the acidity has plenty of snap.
First Ridge Barbera
-
94 Points - "Delicate fruits muse and are highlighted by sour cherries, dark cherries and plums with a flicker of black currants. A little dark chocolate and vanilla pod enters the frame late. It glides about carefree with smooth, rounded edges. Great acidity with a little varietal crunch shapes this wonderfully. It's quite impressive.."
-
93 Points - "The team source their Barbera from the very highest parts of their Mudgee vineyards, at about 600 metres. After a couple of days cold soaking, the wine spends time maturing in French oak, 15% new. Very dark purple hue, the wine is quite an earthy style with notes of mushrooms, chocolate, blackfruits, aniseed and cloves. While the nose gives an impression of some rusticity, the palate is more to the plush. A fine, seamless structure, there is very good length and sleek tannins. The oak is deftly handled and fresh acidity gives the wine good energy whilst the palate sees an emergence of coffee bean notes. Enjoy this for at least the next six to eight years."
-
91 Points - "Deep garnet in colour. Steeping plums, dried cranberry, pouch tobacco, roast beetroot, licks of vanilla oak (15% new) and char. Medium to full. Plummy, spiced fruit balanced by umami roasting pan juices cut with some surprising acidity. Tannins firm and drying showcase a fine frame. Enjoyable solo but spot on with meaty dishes."

Barbera is deeply coloured with generous flavours of blue and black fruits, modest tannins and a hallmark ping of acidity. Barbera is the daily wine of Piedmontese winegrowers in Italy, who save their precious nebbiolo for the region’s many tourists.
Deep purple red in colour with buoyant aromas of ripe blueberries, mulberries and fresh boysenberries with a background of clove, nutmeg and a lift of sweet vanillin oak.
The palate reflects the generosity of the nose with mouthfilling Damson plum, blueberry and blackberry flavours. The spice cupboard is opened too -with star anise and Szechuan pepper to the fore. The tannins are surprisingly soft and rounded while a ping of acidity enlivens the finish.
