Situated over 500 metres above sea level the Mudgee Ridge vineyards are positioned on ancient red volcanic soils punctured with quartz crystals. It is these soils coupled with the steep vineyard site and aspect that nurture exceptional low yielding vines

Mudgee has a long and distinguished history with Italian varieties. Aleatico vines were planted at the old Augustine vineyard in 1918 and are still in existence today.  Australia’s first plantings of Sangiovese, Barbera and Nebbiolo were imported by the Italian winemaking pioneer Carlo Corino in 1974.

Winemaker, James Manners, has hand crafted many award winning wines over the years and is very passionate about the region the unique soils and its influence in wines.

Vineyard;  First Ridge Wines
Elevation; 570 metres
Soils; Well drained rich red and grey loams, Ironstone gravels over quartzite and sandstone sub strata
Vine age; planted 1999
Viticulture;carful management of vine canopy and fruit thinning to ensure even ripening, irrigated when required.
Winemaking; harvested at 14.5 degree beaume` crushed to a small fermenter and gently pumped over during a relatively cool 12 day fermentation.Pressed into new french and older barrels for 12 months until bottling
Description; typically bright spicy berry aromas which leads to a palate of rich dark plum and spice,with vanillin oak, backed by crisp acidity, soft tannins a hall mark of the variety.
Cellar up to 8 years
Alc/vol 13.7 %.  pH 3.64.  TA 5.52 g/L.


The goal is to produce wines that are honest and reflect regionality  and our single vineyard management procedures in terms of pruning, fruit thinning, canopy manipulation, pest and disease monitoring and careful irrigation.
